Values Exercises

Exploring your values is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. A fun way to do this is through a hands on choice exercise where you explore, group and sense-check values until you have a top 6 to work with now.

Values Card Exercise:

A 10 minute hands on exercise exploring your values.

Values Card Instructions (Same as Video^)

1 - make a list of all possible values

1 - make a list of all possible values

1 - make a list of all possible values

Make up your own list of values to get started or quickly find lists on the internet. You can start with as many as you want. Through this process you will eventually narrow it down to six.

2 - put values on small bits of paper

1 - make a list of all possible values

1 - make a list of all possible values

Notice your feelings as you write the values on paper. You will start to sense which ones feel most important and this sensing is an important step.

3 - one at time, keep or let go

1 - make a list of all possible values

3 - one at time, keep or let go

Now, with your values on bits of paper, go through them one-by-one and keep those you feel a strong connection with. Set the others aside.

4 - group common values

4 - group common values

3 - one at time, keep or let go

Next, group any values remaining that are similar. Then, contemplate which one is most important in the grouping, and keep one from the group.

5 - sense and sort

4 - group common values

6 - select your top 6

This is when it gets a bit harder. There are so many  wonderful values and all of them are worthy. The key now is to sense which are your top 6.

6 - select your top 6

4 - group common values

6 - select your top 6

Through your own efforts and sensing, you'll come to a point where you feel clear that the 6 remaining values are most important to you now.

Inquiry Exercise to help identify your values

For each of the following twelve questions write three things that most apply to you, in order of priority.

How do you fill your space?

How do you spend your time?

How do you spend your energy?

How do you spend your money?

Where you are most organized?

Where you are most disciplined?

What do you think about most?

What do you envision or visualize most?

What do you internally dialogue about most?

What do you externally dialogue about most?

What do you react to most?

What do you set goals towards most?

Next: use the chart below to identify what aspects show up most frequently and list them in order of priority.

Then: choose a value name/title for each theme (use your own or use the list below for ideas)

Final step: add the 6 values that are most prominent for you now into your Arena of Life

Here is a list of common (and uncommon values):

This list is neither complete nor definitive. It is a guide. Please add your own.
