An intrinsic value stems from ones core beliefs about what is inherently important and comes from within. These are typically qualities like love, truth, freedom or happiness. Intrinsic values can also come from cultural or religious beliefs that form the genesis of who you are.
An extrinsic value relates to core beliefs around how to behave or engage with others. Often times these values are connected to a situation or role and impact how you show up in a certain context like work or sports.
Values are the expression of what is important to us and reflect the things we intuitively strive to gain or keep. Values can be concrete things like money, spirituality, career, vocation, family, friendships, romantic relationship or knowledge or they can be abstract things like love, joy, contribution, challenge, adventure or wisdom.
Values are found in almost all dimensions of our lives such as family values, personal values, corporate values and school or university values.
Values, in conjunction with what we believe fulfill our values, have a decisive impact on the choices we make in navigating our lives. When you are attuned to and aligned to your values, they become the lighthouse that guides you every decision. Living in alignment with your values brings greater levels of Joy, freedom, fulfillment and peace in our lives. They helps us discern our clear “yes’s” and clear ‘no’s” in how we choose live, show up, how we present to the world and how we interact with others. We make key decisions based on our values.
How are Values are important to creating breakthroughs?
Many people in today’s modern world and whichever context feel a strong desire to live a purpose driven life and give of themselves. You can give only from what you have. The core of your true self – is the place where you will locate insight, creativity, imagination, and profound intelligence. When you know what is happening at your very core, what you have to give becomes limitless. Your values are integral to knowing your true self and therefore are profoundly influential in aligning you to what you have to give to the world to leave a lasting impact.
If we believe a proposed action or choice will give us more of what we value, we are likely to make that choice or take that action. The degree to which we are likely to make a choice or to take an action, is influenced by the strength of our beliefs regarding how much we think the value will increase in our lives.
Our values can often remain hidden from us as they sit in an unconscious values system. Essentially as human beings we are constantly evaluating whether something is going to provide us with a positive experience or negative experience. A hidden value system will cause you to make choices that are sometimes inexplicable—namely, when faced with a choice between option A over option B, you choose option A even though B seems logical however it somehow conflicts your unconscious values system.
How can we connect more to our Values?
Knowing your values, bringing them either from the unconscious or subconscious mind will help you consciously construct your life aligned to your values system and this has the potential to turn any venture you embark on into a highly fulfilling and experience often times with peek performance experiences. A value system, that is out in the open, organized and prioritized and even captured in a values statement serves as a guide in evaluating your options and inventing new ones.
In other words, if you understand the values that motivate you, you can deliberately choose actions, which will satisfy those values, leading to greater fulfillment and choices that will support liberating more of your potential and creative genius. They make you feel good, and keep you conflict-free, and internally consistent. They reduce or eliminate your personal internal friction, allowing you to easily take massive action towards objectives that are meaningful in life.
Your values system will also guide you away from making poor choices, ones that can throw you into personal conflict. Choices, which make you unhappy and could have a negative impact not just on yourself but on others.
Well-understood and clearly expressed and articulated values can propel you through the most challenging change periods and keep you far ahead of the wandering crowd. The keep you focused on accomplishing your life’s ambitions, give you energize you and will propel you to greater and greater levels of personal joy.
