“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. But as that decision is repeated, a habit sprouts and grows stronger.” James Clear (Atomic Habits)
The joyous mystery embedded into the creation process is who we become in the process of achieving our ambitions. What we do or get is important and valuable, but the true nectar is in the transformative growth process that is in store for those who dare to create!
Initiatives, in the Arena of Life process, are integral to who it is that we become. They inform what we do internally and externally to achieve our vision. When we name our initiatives and commit to daily action and effort, we create new habits; and small changes in daily habits creates a new experience.
What is an initiative? An initiative is an action you take with a clear purpose and passion. Typically, initiative is associated with a strong desire and a will to achieve or change an outcome. It is common to hear, for example, about passionate people starting an 'Initiative' for something that they feel would better serve the whole.
A good way to think about initiatives is to think about them in the context of creating habits. Through executing small changes in habits and collecting a series of small wins and tiny breakthroughs, supports progress to achieving your aspirations as defined in your Arena.
In his book, Atomic Habits, the author James Clear points out that the most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become. He says: “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.”

Your identity emerges out of your habits and the quality of your habits dictates the quality of your life. Clear lays out simply how the maths works out when fostering new habits. If you can get 1 percent better each day for one year in something, you’ll end up thirty- seven times better by the time you’re done. Conversely, if you get 1 percent worse each day for one year, you’ll decline nearly down to zero.
Regardless of where you are in the journey of creating the life you want, most important is that your initiatives shape your habits to progress you towards the success you desire. Initially, initiatives may be super obvious but as you progress they may be completely new and unexpected. This is when it gets fun because you start to see the innate wisdom within you that knows the way and is ready to support you on your journey. Sustainble change and meaningful transformation??? For this reason, explore this journey of determininig your initiatives, be creative and feel into the flow of what comes up for you.
A good way to think about initiatives is to think about them in the context of creating habits. When you execute a small change in a habit and collect a series of small wins and tiny breakthroughs, you support your progress in achieving your Arenas aspirations.
The following process is powerful and will help guide you to surface quality initiatives already present within your intentions, and to discover new ones.
Once you have gained insights into these dimensions, take time to imagine the future you who has embodied these habits and imagine how your life will have transformed. What sort of outcomes would you personally be experiencing, or your community or organization be experiencing?
Remember, success is the place where opportunity meets consistently applied initiatives. Success is not a single big event, but rather an accumulation of quality initiatives preceding a final breakthrough. These initiatives are like catalysts that rouse and agitate latent potential, and ultimately release it from its state of inertia into a dynamic expression of capability.
For each intention you are able to add up to 6 initiatives (you do not have to add all 6 initiatives) to set your course of action and effort. As an example, let's say a person creates an Arena of 'well-being' for themselves. The next step would be for the person to set 6 intentions for the Arena. The final step would be to add initiatives. For example, in an Arena of 'well-being', with an intention of a 'balanced lifestyle', these are the 6 initiatives:
1 - make rest a priority
2 - hydrate daily
3 - do a variety of exercise
4 - breathe deeply to lower stress
5 - be actively compassionate with myself
6 - balance time with friends and family
This example shows how initiatives are wide ranging and cover all domains mental, physical, emotional and spiritual. Initiatives can really be anything that relate to your intention. The key is to connect to your vision, contemplate and feel what are the most important elements for you to focus on now.
What makes this tool so unique is that YOU create and discover the pathway to accomplishing your aspirations in any or all Arena’s. Each element of your Arena of Life will reflect who you are, what you want to achieve and the things that you currently value.
This experience is really an invitation for you to explore these things as well. It's not about getting it right or trying out someone else's formula. It is a process of self-discovery and Arena of Life empowers you to discover your own formula for creating the experience what you want, what's working, what needs to change and continually moving toward fulfilling the purpose of the creativity! And that is for you to discover greater and greater truths about who you are capable of becoming. This sits at the heart of the design of the Arena of Life.
Adding initiatives to intentions is like watering and fertilizing plants in your garden so they grow and fruit.
Initiative Examples
The Arena of life scoring method allows you to numerically track your progress on the way to achieving your aspirations. It allows you to set your current performance (initial score) out of 10 in each arena and then identify where you want it to be (target score). Extra Tip: Reflecting on your scores provides a means for you to prioritize your focus based on what stands out, as well as what is relevant and important to you at a particular point in time.
A target score is a numerical representation of your vision and creates a mechanism for you to track your progress. Once you've chosen an Initiative to focus on, contemplate and visualize what you want to experience and then set a score that reflects your internal vision for where you feel you want to be.
In choosing a target score consider how important this is to you, where it fits into your priorities and what energy expenditure will be required to achieve it in the next 1, 3, 6 months. As yourself: "What score reflects my vision and the time and energy I have to achieve it?"
Set an Initial Score once you've named your Initiative and have a vision and target for what you want to achieve. It may be helpful to ask yourself, "Where am I now in relationship to this initiative?"
Understanding your initial position is an important step. It helps you honor and recognize where you are now and also tune more specifically into what is between you and your desire presently. This type of contemplation can help you identify what the gaps are and more precisely name the areas you want to shift and focus in you initiatives.
As an example, for an initiative of 'breathe more slowly' you may recognize that you are currently at a level 3 for the skill, but you want to be at an 8. In acknowledging that you are at a 3 you can see that you do have a certain amount of skill in say, watching your breath, and can be proud of that, and at the same time want to significantly increase the depth or coherence to get it to an overall 8. Scores are an essential feature of the Arena of Life and viewable on Score View, Compare and Trends.
This is a key step. Feelings and emotions play an important part in fueling the creative process and connect us more deeply to our vision. The invitation is to imagine what it will feel like to achieve this target and upgrade your experience. You can even practice feeling and generating the emotion now that you will feel when this is achieved to boost its power. The more you connect to the feeling of this initiative, the more it will come to life and become a reference point for the experience you want.
Once you've successfully created an initiative, the next step is to reflect, but first, celebrate! A big congrats for creating your vision for this Arena and providing both clear intentions and actionable initiatives. This is such a huge accomplishment!
Once you have fully designed an Arena, and added initiatives, you are ready to start the reflection process. Reflecting is how you track your journey and watch your Arena come to life. For detailed steps on the reflection process, click here. Or, start now by double-tapping any initiative.
